Fun Educational Long Island Activities-Uplands Farm Winter Bird Watching

A Cook's Tour of North Shore Winter Waterfowl Hotspots
Uplands Farm Sanctuary
250 Lawrence Hill Rd
Cold Spring Harbor, NY

Sat., Jan. 18, 2014
10 a.m.

Join members of the Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society in exploring a very special Long Island spot for bird watching during the cold winter months. There could be up to three-dozen different species taking a break on their migratory journeys down south to warmer climes. Long Island is full of hidden bays and ponds, as well as sheltered lakes and harbors. Long Island Sound's open waters are also often populated by these traveling feathered creatures. This field trip will take place at the Nature Conservancy's Long Island office and preserve at the Uplands Farm Sanctuary-97 acres of a former dairy farm.

Some tips on exploring the great outdoors: When viewing wildlife, make sure to avoid getting too close, for your safety and the safety of the animal or bird. While walking, move slowly, and quietly, and, surprising to some, try to stay in the animal's view. Sneaking up on or startling them can lead to stress for everyone involved- humans, animals, and birds. Remember not to feed wildlife, and remind young children about this golden rule as well.

The mission of the Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society is to protect birds and wildlife through preservation of their habitats, education, and advocacy. The Uplands Farm field trip is open to the public. Parking is available in the Sanctuary's parking lot or in the adjoining grassy field. A liability waiver must be signed in advance, and pre-registration is required. To sign up for the field trip to Uplands Farm Sanctuary or find out more, call (516) 695-0763.
