Visiting Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum

Have you been to the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum? Explore the rich maritime history of Long Island's fabled whaling industry at this popular landmark close to the waterfront. Featuring fascinating exhibits and historic artifacts, the museum is a haven for history lovers of all types.

Visitors can see gigantic whale bones up close and learn how tools were used by whalers with interactive exhibits. One of the highlights of the collection is a 19th-century whaling vessel that has been carefully restored with its original gears in tact. Visitors can see an impressive display of scrimshaw, one of the finest collections on the East Coast. Step back into the life of a whaling village in 1850. There is a full diorama of Cold Spring Harbor that captures the unique history of living in a 19th-century Long Island coastal community.

The museum also hosts a number of special events throughout the year. From talks by local historians on whaling culture to family-friendly festivals to celebrate annual holidays, there's always something going on at this North Shore museum. Check the calendar for upcoming events.

The Whaling Museum and Education Center is located in Cold Spring about 10 minutes away from our all-suites hotel. Admission is $6 for adults and $5 for seniors and children ages 4-18. It is open in winter from 12 to 4 pm Tuesdays through Fridays and 11 am to 5 pm on weekends. In the summertime, the hours are daily from 11 am to 5 pm beginning on Memorial Day and running through Labor Day.
