Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum

The Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum is a maritime museum dedicated to the history of the local whaling industry. The museum features exhibits and artifacts that showcase the relationship between the people and the ocean, including one of the most noted scrimshaw collections in the country, whale bones and a fully-restored 19th-century whaleboat with its original gear. The library and archival collection features ship's logs, business correspondence and journals of the Cold Spring Whaling Company.

  • What children activities are there?

    Stuck inside on a rainy day? The museum offers many indoor activities for kids to learn about the oceans and sea conservation, as well as storytelling, arts and crafts, magic shows and the Butterfly Program. Join fun activities like Whale Origami Craft, Salty Ice Experiment, Ocean Motion Craft, and Water on a String, Wild Water Activities and Jellyfish in a Bottle.
  • What types of exhibits are displayed?

    The museum features exhibits and artifacts that highlight the whaling history of Long Island and Cold Spring Harbor, and events that showcase the relationship between people and the ocean. Check out exhibits such as Sea Ink Tattoos & The American Sailor and Waves & Watercolors: Sea & Create Art. The museum collection includes a 19th-century whaleboat, one of the most famous scrimshaw collections in the Northeast, a sperm whale jaw, whale bones.
